We
DID find mutual enjoyment over baking, however. Tiana is really into home made
things, as many Aussies are. I've noticed they all take the time to prepare
"proper meals" as they call it. Guys will spend an hour cooking a
steak or making a chicken casserole dish for themselves with a lovely salad.
All the Americans have the Australian version of Ramen noodles and EasyMac in
their cupboards. We ended up chopping up all our potatoes and making homemade potato salad and potato bake. Then we made a salad with lettuce, oranges, applesauce, walnuts and an amazing dressing she made. It consisted of oil, honey, lemon juice, and whatever else we thought would go well with the mix. It was delicious! For dessert we made brownies from scratch and banana bread. As we sat down to eat this feast, we realized no guys were around to help us, so we ended up with LOTS of leftovers.
After dinner, we wanted to go dancing, so we went to a club downtown. By dancing goofy, we managed to keep all the guys away from us on the dance floor, which is an accomplishment on its own! Four hours later, we decided to take the free taxi home before our feet started to hurt from all the dancing. It was a fun time out, and we were wide away afterwards. We ended up staying up till 6 am, just talking and hanging out. I found out that she is of Aboriginal decent but doesn't like to associate with them, because she doesn't find it fair to get extra attention and compensation from the government. We also talked about her high school and past friends, and it amazes me how similar it is half way across the world. Same drama. Same issues. Different continent. She was about to put it another "comedy" and I knew I wouldn't be able to stay awake for the (extremely-boring-in-my-opinion) movie, so we called it a night. It was so fun to catch up with her and have a peaceful quiet weekend without the guys.
(The next night, the boys came home and I was up until 4 am-NOT by choice this time.)
I can't imagine being so loud at night when others are trying to sleep, but it doesn't seem to phase them. I know they mean well, but I just lay in bed all night, wishing my room had sound-proof walls, wondering to myself how they can't be aware of how obnoxiously loud they are. It's turned into a game-I will go out there around 2 am, in my pjs, and tell them to PLEASE. QUIET. DOWN. An hour later, they might go from heavy-metal-concert- noise, to baseball-stadium-crowd noise level. It has become my source of amusement in a way, and if I can get through a semester of this, I can pretty much do anything! :)
